Utility or Sporting Clip for a Poodle

For “Utility” or “Sporting” clip use a No. 5 Oster for the summer and a No. 4 for the winter. A thick coat can happily be taken down with the No. 10, going with the growth of the hair, in the summertime.

  • Clip the neck from the base of the head, down over the shoulder, down the back to the tail, down and along the rib cage and under the chest, stomach and groin area.
  • Clip the back leg, inside and out, to an inch above the hock joint. Then, with an eyeline to balance, clip inside and out of the front leg to the same level. For the eyeline, just look at where the clip mark of the back leg ends and draw an imaginary line across to the front leg.
  • Bathe and dry the Poodle, as for the “Lamb” clip.
  • Check the nails, ears and teeth.
  • Scissor the topknot as for the ” Lamb” clip.
  • Comb the long hair on the legs outward (bracelets) and scissor the bracelets into an oval shape.
  • Trim the dog’s tail as you would for the “Lamb” clip.
