Grooming Tips for a Great Looking Dog!

Dental Care for Great Danes

A puppy typically has 28 teeth, whereas the average adult will have 42. Great Dane puppies start to lose their baby teeth as early as three months of age. Most teeth fall out on their own accord while eating or during play. Yet in some cases they remain, even though a permanent tooth is growing in. It is not a concern for a few days, but if the baby tooth remains for a week or more, it may need to be extracted by a veterinarian.

To help your Great Dane’s pearly whites, you can begin with dental care when he is just a puppy. There are a variety of devices, from standard-looking toothbrushes to brushes you slip on your finger. Also available is toothpaste made just for dogs, which often comes in meat-based flavors for your dog’s enjoyment.

If you prefer, you can use just water. It is ideal to brush his teeth once a day. Plaque buildup can lead to more serious problems. Other than brushing his choppers, you may wish to consider products that dissolve plaque buildup by altering the mouth pH in hopes of preventing the need for professional cleaning. Never use toothpaste made for humans, as it is not made to be ingested and could make him feel ill.

The most common problem from plaque is tartar. Allowed to spread, tartar can lead to periodontal disease. This can cause tooth loss and bacteria enter the bloodstream and attack the organs. Giving hims a large raw soup bone may help him clean his own teeth. The chewing action action and extra saliva help break down tartar.

Always monitor heavy chewing, as tooth damage could occur. If plaques with tartar he may need to have it removed by a veterinarian. If that is necessary, ask if the work can be done without anesthesia.

Tooth Count. Although most Great Danes have a total of 42 adult teeth, some may be missing teeth. This in itself is no cause for alarm, as they are often small pre-molars, which have little effect. However, it may mean you need to be extra careful with your Great Dane’s dental care program, as teeth near the vacant spot may develop uneven wear or possibly an increase of tartar buildup.
