Grooming Tips for a Great Looking Dog!

Checking a Border Collie’s Teeth

checking a border collie's teethChecking a Border Collie’s teeth is a regular part of bench trials, and it is an activity that all Border Collie owners should perform weekly. Along with regular physical exams, your Collie should be scheduled for dental exams at least annually. If your veterinarian suggests professional cleaning (under anesthesia), have it done.

Buildup of tartar on the teeth is the number one cause of tooth disease and loss of teeth. The time and effort involved in getting your dog in for a dental appointment will pay off in the long run.

In between dental appointments:

  • Check your pet’s teeth regularly for decay, tartar, damage, and inclusions such as wood or other foreign substances.
  • Provide veterinary approved chew toys. These toys are designed to enhance canine dental health.
  • Feed kibbled foods; hard foods help reduce plaque buildup on teeth.
  • Clean teeth several times a week with brushes and toothpaste especially developed for dogs. If the dog does not like brushes, you can clean his teeth by wrapping a thin cloth around your forefinger and using that instead.
  • Begin cleaning your Border Collie‘s teeth as early as possible. Make the experience as pleasant as possible.
  • Pull the gums away from the teeth and brush slowly up and down, taking care not to bruise the gums or lips. Work from the back of the mouth to the front, top to bottom. Once the outsides of the teeth have been cleaned, use the same techniques to clean the inside. You may find it necessary to take rest periods if your dog gets restless or upset.
